More than 100 water utility leaders from throughout the US and Canada gathered in Washington, DC to share strategies for removing lead service lines that connect millions of older homes to water mains. A March 2016 study published by AWWA estimated some 6.1 million lines remain in the US, serving approximately seven percent of the population. In most communities, portions of the lead service lines are owned by the water utility and portions are owned by customers. AWWA recently announced its support for the US National Drinking Water Advisory Council’s recommendation to remove these service lines nationwide over time.
